Tyre FAQs
Find answers to the most frequently asked questions about tyres and tyre care.
-
What is the legal tyre tread?
The UK legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre around the full circumference. However, for optimal safety and performance, we strongly recommend replacing tyres when tread depth reaches 3mm. Wet weather braking distances increase significantly below 3mm, and winter driving becomes much more dangerous. Most tyre manufacturers also void warranties below 3mm tread depth.
-
How do I check my tyre tread?
You can check tread depth using a tread depth gauge, or look for the built-in tread wear indicators (small bars across the tyre grooves). The 20p test is also effective - insert a 20p coin into the tread groove with the outer band facing down. If you can see the outer band, your tyres are below the legal limit. We offer free tread depth checks at our centre and can advise on replacement timing.
-
What tyre pressure should my tyres be?
Check your vehicle's door jamb sticker, fuel cap, or owner's handbook for the correct pressure specifications. Tyre pressures vary depending on load and speed, with different values for normal driving vs. high-speed driving. Always check pressures when tyres are cold (not driven for at least 2 hours). We inflate all tyres to manufacturer specifications after every fitting and provide a pressure check service.
-
How far can you drive on a flat tyre?
Driving on a flat tyre is extremely dangerous and can cause severe damage to the tyre, wheel, and vehicle. Stop as soon as it's safe to do so. Run-flat tyres allow limited travel (usually 50 miles at reduced speed) to reach a safe location. Standard tyres should not be driven on when flat. Always carry a spare tyre or tyre repair kit, and consider breakdown cover for emergency assistance.
-
How many miles do tyres last?
Tyre lifespan varies significantly based on driving style, road conditions, vehicle maintenance, and tyre quality. Most standard tyres last 20,000–40,000 miles, while performance tyres may wear sooner (15,000–25,000 miles). Factors affecting longevity include: aggressive driving, poor wheel alignment, incorrect tyre pressure, road surface quality, and weather conditions. Regular rotation and proper maintenance can extend tyre life considerably.
